Hello all. Recently purchased a Savage 111 in 30-06 and need to purchase a scope for it. I would like to keep it under $300. I know I won't be getting top shelf for what I have to spend but used might be ok as well. I would like to hear thoughts and recommendations from you all. Your experiences with what works and doesn't and where to shop. Appreciate any input.

Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 is hard to beat under $200
Thank you Alan. I have several Vortex scopes, a Sonoma and a crossfire on other rifles. While they are adequate so far, I haven't shot those rifles much, I thought the field of view was somewhat lacking. I will pull the Crossfire off and put it on the Savage. It's on a older Marlin 22 mag now, so I'll see how that works for me. I have a wide view on one of my 22's that I really like, Burris I believe, but not made anymore and Burris's quality has gone down from what I hear. Thank you very much for the suggestion. I'll post how it works for me after I give it a "shot".

Do you have any stores which sell used scopes near you, or know any shooters who have upgraded their rigs recently? I've got a couple used ones from buddies who upgraded and it's the best way I know to get a good scope cheap.

I could check some of the gun stores but don't know anyone looking to sell one. I bought a used Nikon on EBay last year and had good luck but that's kind of a crap shoot even though they have a good refund policy. I bought a leather holster last month off Ebay for my SA 1911 and it didn't fit, got the refund no problem. I'll try the local gun stores, have a couple around within 40 miles. I wish there was a gun show close. I haven't been been to one in years but they used to have a lot of them. If anyone knows someone wanting to sell one massage me. Thanks for the suggestion Spikedriver.

@Marine63 not sure where you're located, but Des Moines, Davenport, and Waterloo all have gun shows coming up in April and May. I think Council Bluffs has one coming up too.

I'll check on that. I'm in Marengo, about 75 minutes east of Des Moines. Davenport is about the same. At least those will be big I hope. I went to a couple in Davenport at the fair ground I think. It was back in the 90's, . Thank you. my uncle lived there. Good info

At that price point, I’d focus more on clarity and durability than on the brand name. Some affordable scopes perform really well if you keep your expectations reasonable and choose one that fits your rifle.

Go over to Gabes south of Williamsburg. They sell new but also have a number of used.

For new Vortex look on GovX. They are typically 35-45% of for military and and Leo.

I would throw in the option of Leupold Freedom scopes- good quality generally. How far out do you plan on shooting the rifle?

Hey M63,

I think I have a 3-9 Leupold loose or I can take one off a gun I'm not using if you want to use it till you find something?
Thank you for the offer and thank you all for the insight and suggestions. I was lucky to be at a garage sale yesterday and found a Burris fullfield 3x9 for $40. I already have it mounted and laser bore sighted. It has flip up lens covers which are a bonus. Hopefully will get to shoot a bit soon and get it dialed in. I ended up putting it on a Marlin 22mag , 75-100 yards will be my zero depending on how she shoots. Will give a range report when finished. Again, many thanks to everyone.

A little known secret, the Redfield Revolution scopes were actually made by Leupold, they can be found on e-bay for under 300 bucks, many times NiB. this applies to the Revolution scopes only.

Sorry my reply is so late, I missed your post. I very much appreciate the offer. I found a used 3x9 Bushnell sport view that I really like. I appreciate the extra width on any range of power and the rifle is giving me 1 inch group off a bag. Thanks again for your generous offer. Gary

Now that Academy sporting goods stores own Redfield, are they just Chinese junk or are they any good?

I have one of the Academy Chinese scopes...yeah, they don't compare well to the Leupold built scopes, pretty much right there with other Chinese made optics....you can get decent glass, but I wouldn't bet a hunt on one. just my opinion.

That's kind of what I expected.
