I'm thinking about taking my 5-year-old out fishing soon since I saw some kids having a blast at the pond down the street. I've never done it myself, so I'm looking for any advice on what kind of setup I should get. Are those little kids' rods from Walmart enough to catch a few fish? I just want to have some fun and maybe make some good memories together.

The little Barbie or Spider Man rod and reels from Walmart will work, for now. My daughter started at age 4 with a Barbie pole and she caught a lot of sunfish with it. By 7 or 8 they'll easily be ready for a bigger one. Keep it simple, just use a worm, hook, sinker, and bobber at first and find a local spot with lots of little sunfish or bullheads. Little kids don't usually care how big the fish are, they like to catch anything. If the fish don't bite, let them put the pole down and go looking for frogs or whatever so they don't get bored, or they won't want to go fishing again. Have fun!

Figure out what the fish in the pond are and what they are biting on. Any cheap pole and tackle will work. Casting for your 5 year old on the first casts will probably be best. Hopefully the fish are biting. Go when the other children are there so they can help the both of you.

Making it easy for them is the best approach. Putting them on the fish and making sure they are enjoying the wait for their first fish i know is important. The grandson caught his first nice channel Cat last Thursday. It was well worth it giving up my seat!
