I usually do most of my hunting in open farmland. What kind of magnification would you recommend for shots between 100 and 300 yards?

Depends on what you're shooting at. Smaller targets make high magnification useful. My rule of thumb is that anything over 12x is a waste for hunting. Even at 12x any little wobble of the gun gets magnified a lot. I have two scopes right now, one is a fixed 6x and the other is a 1-4x variable.

For the hunting you are describing, any good quality 3-9x variable power scope will probably do anything you need it to do...

When it comes to general-purpose hunting, I usually go for something like a 3-9x scope. It’s got the perfect mix of versatility and lightness, and it keeps things pretty simple. But if you find yourself taking those longer shots and need a bit more precision, going to a 4-12x or a 3-15x can really make a difference. It gives you that extra edge without going overboard.
