Summer can feel slow when it comes to hunting, but I try to use it to my advantage. I've been sorting through my gear, checking cameras, and hitting the gym, though I can't shake this feeling that I must be neglecting something crucial, so I'm curious how others tackle their summer prep.

In a couple of weeks, I'll dig out the crossbow (rotator cuff surgery), wax the string, lube the rail, lightly oil the the metal nuts and bolts, then check the scope. Hopefully, I'll have most of November off and hit the rut hard.

I already inspected the muzzleloaders. I need to weigh my charges and reprime my LMRP brass modules (smokeless muzzleloaders), then hit the range to confirm my zeroes. I'll most likely hunt late muzzleloader this year.

A few weeks later, I hope to do some scouting. I already have good spots from last year, but it never hurts to check.

So many things on the list, but brushing in a ground blind for the grandsons will be the first. Placing the cell camera this week to see what bucks of any size are on the property. We lost a lot of deer to blue tung disease last summer.

If you hunt private property, then always make sure your shooting lanes are clear along with deer trails. I get into the woods at least once/month during the summer to make sure the deer paths are clear and weeds and brush are cut. I do a great deal of weed trimming on the paths. I also am in a constant battle with trail cameras to make sure they are working properly. Youth season is less than a month away, so I will be taking my friend's boy out (he only has two years left for this great opportunity). To sum up, make sure the woods are ready to go, along with all your clothes and gear. Practice as much as you think you need to with the crossbow, and firearms. Good luck on the upcoming season-I'm counting down the days.
