I've been hearing a lot of chatter about .45+P lately, especially when it comes to defense. I get the hype, I feel like it has a solid place in hunting too, especially if you're trying to keep bears away. Those hard cast bullets really makes a difference. I'm no gun expert, but I've been wondering something simple that if the speeds of the bullets are pretty similar, can a standard .45 ACP FMJ really hold its own against a bear like a hotter .45+P hard cast can?

I wonder about the "Hard cast" aspect of the whole situation. Isn't anything harder than pure lead considered "hard cast"? I cast with wheel weights and that is about as exotic as I am going to get.

As far a defense of Da Bears, If your gun is reliable with +p I think you want as much horse power as possible. Even if it's just a little better.

I wouldn’t trust standard FMJ rounds for this kind of situation. Even if they’re clocking in at velocities similar to .45+P, the bullet design just isn’t meant for getting through thick hide, muscle, and bone. FMJs might zip through soft tissue, but they often don’t make it to the vitals.

A hard-cast heavy bullet that’s rated +P is definitely my go-to. But if I'm in a bear country, a rifle, or a shotgun will suffice....
