Hope everyone's having a good time here!

I'd love to know, what’s one hunting mistake you’ll always remember? Maybe it was that moment your scope went busted, or you realized the boots you wore were totally wrong, or perhaps you spooked the game way too soon. I’d love to hear your stories. Let’s swap some lessons and have a good laugh along the way!

I’ll never forget my first solo deer hunt. I was buzzing with excitement and ended up getting to my spot about 3 hours before the sun even thought about coming up. I set up my climber and got all settled in, thinking I had plenty of time to kill, so I figured I might as well take a quick nap. Well, that ā€œquick napā€ turned into a solid 2hr snooze fest.

When I finally woke up, I heard deer quietly moving right beneath my stand totally in broad daylight. I shot up way too quickly, bumped my bow against the tree, and scared the whole group off. The largest doe just stopped about 60 yards away and looked at me as if to say, ā€œReally, dude?ā€

To make matters worse, I’m pretty sure a decent buck was in that group too, but everything happened so fast and I was so out of it that I barely even caught a glimpse of him before they all took off.

These days, I set multiple alarms on my phone, but honestly, the adrenaline usually keeps me awake anyway.

Was Pheasant hunting, not dressed for the cold front that moved in so was road hunting on the way home. Saw a rooster in the road ditch, drove past a short ways, got out loaded the old 97 and started back down the road. The bird flew and I shot. Bird dropped in the pasture next to the road ditch. Retrieved the bird and went back to the car, half froze, bare handed could hardly open the car door. Stuck the gun in and crawled in. Dawned on me that in the cold I did not lower the hammer on the shotgun. Reaching over to do that with one hand, I pulled the hammer back a bit and released the trigger. BNAG ! One hole in the floor board of that old Mercury that was not supposed to be there. Last time that gun was put in a vehicle before it was completely unloaded.
