Are gas system improvements keeping pace with short barrels, or are manufacturers still saturating the market?

It seems like there are definitely improvements out there, but you still need to be a bit careful. Some setups run perfectly, while others just feel like you're making a trade-off.

I remember swapping between a short barrel and a mid-length at the range, feeling the difference immediately, like one was tuned for speed while the other just stayed calm under pressure.

Some makers are catching on, but plenty of short barrel setups still need an aftermarket adjustable gas block to run clean without beating up the bolt carrier group over time.

That’s true, especially with some of the shorter gas systems where dwell time gets unforgiving. Without tuning, they can end up over-gassed, which is rough on the BCG and everything behind it. A lot of modern setups are starting to solve it at the buffer/suppressor tuning level rather than requiring an adjustable block, but in practice your point still stands especially on budget or older builds.
