Considering the current ammunition options and the latest parts, is there still any advantage for a 16" barrel when using a carbine-length gas system?

Carbine gas on a 16-inch barrel still works well if you trust what's been proven. It might kick a little harder than a mid-length but it works with almost any ammo.
