A longer barrel gives you more velocity but adds weight and makes the rifle harder to move with. A shorter barrel is lighter and easier to handle but comes with more blast and less velocity. You just have to pick what actually fits your use and accept the tradeoff.

I bought an "M4gery" MSR with a 14.5" barrel and pinned birdcage on it. The main use was for coyote hunting and secondary was for personal protection. I wish I would've gotten the 18" or 20" medium heavy barrel or maybe the HBAR barrel. I'm never going to be clearing rooms or riding in a HUMVEE with it so the Shorter barrel is useless. The only reason I didn't sell it is because it's extremely accurate and reliable...

Funny how priorities change once you actually use it.

It always makes me chuckle when folks treat barrel length discussions like they need a full engineering presentation. Really, it just boils down to what you're doing with the rifle. My 20-inch is perfect for prone shooting but when I'm trying to make my way through dense woods or hunting from the truck, that 16-inch model feels so much handier.

Pretty much sums it up, every barrel length is a tradeoff. Once you factor in your actual use case, the best choice usually becomes pretty obvious.
