Hey everyone,

I thought it’d be great to get a thread going about our go-to gun shops. What makes a gun shop trustworthy to you? Personally, I look for knowledgeable staff, fair prices, and a solid selection of both new and used firearms. Have you had any really great or not-so-great experiences?

If you’ve got a shop you’d recommend, let us know where it is and what you liked about it. Any tips on their used gun selection, prices, or transfer fees would be awesome too. Let’s help each other out and keep our community informed!

Andy's Armory and Adventure in Nevada is worth a look. He doesn't carry much inventory but he'll order anything you want and he's not a high pressure sales type of guy. He seems to be a big promoter of CZ pistols and 22s. He also sponsors shooting classes, fly fishing classes, has a firearms training simulator, and strangely he sells bicycles and E-bikes at his store...

I'm in the Des Moines area and have been going to Crossroads Shooting Sports for years now, and I really can't say enough good things about it. The staff there really know their stuff, and I always feel like I'm getting a fair deal with their pricing. Plus, they've got a solid selection of used gear that changes up pretty often, which keeps things interesting. The $25 transfer fee is pretty standard around here, so that's not too much to ask.

What I love most, though, is how they treat you. If you have questions, they won't make you feel dumb about asking. And they never pressure you if you're just browsing. They've actually guided me away from some not-so-great purchases in the past, and that really says something about how much they care about their customers.

I’ve only been to Crossroads once, not from the Des Moines but was in town for a weekend event so stopped in. I was impressed by the selection of both firearms and accessories. And that they accepted a woman as a serious customer I bought a few small things but was treated like I’d spent thousands.

Jacobsen's Gun Center in Story City is worth a look. It was run by a local guy my whole life and did good business. The owner retired a few years back, and it's under different management now, but they still do a good job of keeping a big variety of ammunition, reloading supplies and equipment, and even some military surplus in stock. Plus they tend to have a lot of used guns to look at. Prices are average to a little high though.

Another store I've done lots of business with is Lindy's in Boone. It is also under new management and I haven't stopped by since the changeover. Old man Lindy had great prices but very limited stock for guns. It's a tiny store so he didn't have room for much variety. He was fond of buying full pallets of ARs and then putting them on sale cheap. He also seemed to always have primers in stock even during ammo crunches. I believe this new owner is a younger relative and hopefully Lindy taught him to run the store right.
