I'm looking for a mid-range bolt gun that shoots impressively at 400 yards. What’s your must-have for deer hunting? Any lesser-known picks that you’d recommend?

Honestly, if you want a gun that's really good at 400 you're gonna have to spend some money. If you buy a Savage Axis it'll be a crap shoot whether or not it shoots that well. If it were up to me I'd probably get a Tikka or a Weatherby.

The honest truth is that under field conditions most of us have no business shooting 400 yards at a deer anyway. Get closer...

Hard to beat a Tikka for mid range price gun. Many cartridges will work on deer at four hundred and in. Question is, Can the shooter get the shot placement to do the job.

My Ruger American gen 2 Ranch 5.56 fills my needs for varmints.

I have amany bolt guns that are really accurate and a joy to shoot. To name a few, Ruger 77 22-250, Remington 700 223 Heavy, Remington 300 mag, Remington 700 30-06, Savage Axis ll 30-06, Savage Axis 350 Legend, Ruger 77/22 mag, Marlin 783 22mag and several 22's of different manufacturer that are all fun. I also enjoy semi autos but for me personally, bolt action and lever rifles are just the most enjoyable. Shoot straight and have a great day.

Keeping your bolt action rifles is a very good idea. Semi action rifles will have problems before a bolt action rifle will. A couple of my semi auto rifles developed problems and I was able to fall back on my bolt actions.
