I came up on striker-fired guns but a buddy let me run his Colt 1911 for an afternoon. The trigger felt like a cheat code and the ergonomics just worked. It’s high-maintenance, sure but there’s a reason it’s still around.

1911's in odd calibers are fun as well. I have 22 TCM, 7.62x25, 357 Sig, 400 Corbon, and 460 Rowland.

I think the old military, loose fitting guns were every bit as low maintenance as a Glock it's just that most modern 1911's are made to be close fitting for more accuracy. For the little cleaning they require they sure are nice to shoot.

I have a Sig 45 that was my first in that caliber. Great shooter, older made in Germany, not finicky on ammo. I've probably put around 800 rounds through it in 20 years and never had a failure if any kind. I have a couple older series 70 Colts, 9mm and 38 super, they are a little looser but as you said, easy to take care of. You'll have to get yourself one. You can pick a shooter up pretty reasonable or get a SA at a reasonable price also. Glad you got some range time in.

Oh I forgot about Super 38. That is an old standby. Made to the same length as 45 ACP so feeding is still the original geometry. It's a reloaders dream, I really like to shoot cast with mine. Have a .40 slide that cycles 38 just fine.
