Do the newest pistol designs actually bring about real technological progress or are companies merely making slight, cosmetic changes?

Some of the new pistols actually are improved, with better spots for optics and better feel. Others just seem like the same old gun with different lines on the slide. I think the new stuff is just small changes, not big leaps.
